Tanya Tierney Team Realty Inc. Brokerage

I hired Taniya Tierney's office to find me tenants in 2023 as I was under the impression that they were a reputable company and would be informed about policies and procedures regarding tenancies. I put my trust in the brokerage to do their due diligence in finding and performing all the necessary checks of potential tenants as they were the experts in the field. Unfortunately, the agency demonstrated non-performance of duty. They did not do their due diligence which subsequently caused significant, financial, emotional and physical distress to me and my family. The agent Jen Barton, and the company had the responsibility of providing duty of care and skill but the company was negligent.

1)The agency had spelling errors/ discrepancies of the names of the tenants in the tenancy contract.
2) The tenants who were accepted had a notice of eviction publicly available since 2021 on Openroom. This was not caught.
Additionally, sufficient reference checks were not conducted to verify the accuracy of the information presented by the tenants.

The tenants who began their tenancy in my home in May 2023, paid the first and last months rent, they paid rent for June 2023 and then stopped paying rent for the next 8 months. They also did not pay utilities and would refuse to leave the home. They had late night noisy parties regularly and caused major disruption in the neighbourhood. As a result, me and my children experienced extreme financial, emotional and physical trauma. I had to continue paying the mortgage, the rent of another place where I was living with my children and meanwhile legal costs to get the eviction process through. My credit rating plummeted and almost resulted in me losing the home. I had to wait 7 months for the LTB hearing and this caused extreme distress.

In addition to all the financial stress they caused, they also:
1) damaged my home and left it in a state that was not liveable with broken walls and windows
2) garbage was throughout the home
3) tenants left the garage full of garbage which they never threw out from the 9 months that they were in the home .
4) the tenants smoked in the home resulting in smoke smell becoming embedded in the walls and carpets.

I reached out to Taniya Tierney's office repeatedly for help and I was told there is nothing we can do about the situation. Taniya Tierney was also approached personally, but she did not respond. The customer service was terrible.

The LTB hearing to evict the tenants was finally heard in January and the tenants left on February 29th, 2024.

I am now $22,000 in debt from just the non-payment of rent and thousands in utility bill costs. In addition, I have to pay thousands in repairs and clean up costs. This could all have been avoided if Taniya Tierney's staff had done their due diligence in checks.
