1 year ago, while at work, I received a phone call from Dr. Evans at The Good Dentist that was frightening. My niece was scheduled for a deep cleaning which was split into a 2 day process. She went the 1st day and tolerated the procedure without a problem. However, the next day when she went to have the other side cleaned, a few minutes after Laura administered local anesthetics, she began to have tremors, her blood pressure went up, she lost consciousness twice for short periods according to the report I was given over the phone from Dr. Evans. She was transported via ambulance from their office to the ER. When I arrived at the ER she was shaking all over, couldn't stand/walk and her BP was 189/106. After several hours of continuous tremors, shortness of breath, elevated blood pressure, that didn't resolve with IV medications, she was admitted to the hospital. She was diagnosed with drug induced tremors, elevated BP with no history of previous issues, and lactic acidosis. The medication from the injection got into her bloodstream and we were in the hospital 2 days on continuous medications before the tremors reduced. Both Dentists called/texted regularly to check on her while she was in the hospital and seemed to be very concerned about how she was doing. However, a few days after discharge we didn't hear anymore from either of them. We were told by several people that we should seek legal council, but not having ever sued anyone before we decided against this approach. This was my niece's first encounter with their office and her 1st time going back to a dentist in years. She actually felt like they were really nice, especially Laura, and felt like it was not intentional. After receiving medical bills we found that her insurance did not cover either of the ambulance rides, the one from their office to the ER at Camp Jordan and from the ER to Parkridge East. We wrote Dr. Evans and Dr. Fed a letter and included her medical records from this incident, medical bills covered by insurance, medical bills not covered, lost wages, prescription costs, refund request for the service we paid for that she did not receive, and what we felt like was a fair request for the trauma and inconvenience she experienced from a visit to The Good Dentist. She received a phone call from their office a month after we dropped off the package, that the information was being reviewed and they would get back with her, that was in May of this year. She called several times to follow up with no return call. As of today, 1 year later, we have not received any correspondence nor phone call from their office regarding this matter. They didn't send a get well card, sympathy card, and they have yet to refund us for the services not received. They have not assumed any responsibility for their actions. To end up in the hospital for 2 days shaking constantly, short of breath, elevated blood pressure, not to mention the medical bills now being turned over to collections all because she went to get her teeth cleaned is unbelievable. They have not handled this matter with integrity nor assumed responsibility for the trauma caused in her life as a result of a visit to their office whether intentional or not. While, it was a costly lesson for my niece, it may be prevention for someone else.
