My first impressions of Winterholme Spa were quite good. The grand entrance, the beautiful staircase and the gorgeous windows in this historic home are indeed impressive. I was directed to the bright, tastefully decorated waiting room on the second floor where I was enchanted by the antique furniture, architecture and ambiance. Sadly things deteriorated from there. It turned out the room designated for my mani-pedi was, in its day, the maid’s quarters. The renovations in the attic space were sketchy, dilapidated and worn. The bathroom attached to the room, probably added some time in the 90’s, had no door, and had framed-out openings which held dusty candles. An array of pans, tins, manicure tables and stools littered the room. There was a sink - but no soap, and no towels, paper or otherwise. The four “beds” set up for mani-pedis were adorned with tired, wrinkly sheets and bleached, stained towels. The room was painted orange. It was, to say the least, disappointing. The mani-pedi itself was acceptable; however, don’t waste your money on the paraffin wax treatment. My hands and feet were wrapped in warm, stiff paper towels and then placed in slightly warm mitts/slippers. The wax, if there was any, was not sufficiently warm to soften. When the gloves came of - there was no sign of wax having ever touched my skin. When I asked about hot paraffin wax treatment, I was told that those were long gone as they were a waste of materials. I could go on, but I think you get the gist. The final insult was being shown down the servant’s staircase to the back door which exited on to the parking lot at the back of the building. It’s as though the business doesn’t want exiting customers to pass in-coming customers in case they same something about what’s beyond the beautiful entrance and waiting room. It’s unlikely I’ll return. I can think of better ways of spending $160.
